Is life drawing required for designers?

If a student receives a limited spectrum of art education, this will limit his or her ability to create good works of art. These days, we see narrow specialization in many design schools. For example, there are fast graphic design courses where students are taught a limited range of topics like using graphic design software, filters, fonts and colors, etc.

After graduation, such student is hit by the reality that to be a good designer one needs to have strong drawings skills and to be able to do calligraphy, draw logos, create characters, draw figurative artworks and portraits. This won't be possible without developing good life drawing skills.

Even though such a designer would likely only do decorative illustrations and cartoonish characters, it is essential to have the life-drawing background. Without a good knowledge of the human body's construction and proportions, their stylized figurative artworks will be naïve and amateurish. Good comic artists and character designers need to know how to draw figures and portraits. Such knowledge comes with life-drawing practice.

When an artist can draw realistic figures from life, memory, and imagination, they will also be able to stylize figures and create interesting and original characters, illustrate books, draw comics or create cartoons, whatever they desire.
