Using reference images
Using reference images - Many art students ask me if using reference images is a good or bad thing. Many believe that the only way to make hyper-realistic portraits is by copying photos. While there is nothing wrong in using photos for reference, especially when the model is not available, there is a danger of suppressing one's drawing abilities. This happens when a beginner artist learns making portraits by copying flat images instead of learning the needed knowledge of a human head anatomy, proportions and construction. Without this knowledge it would be next to impossible to make a good portrait from memory or imagination. This is when an artist gets into a trap of relying on photos and cannot draw from life.
