Task report from Yumiko, a Life Drawing Academy Correspondence Course student
At Life Drawing Academy, students receive unlimited personal tutoring and learn how to draw whatever they see or imagine. A big portion of this course is dedicated to portrait and figure drawing. One of the topics is about how to draw a nose. In several practical tasks, students sculpt a nose model and learn this facial feature anatomy and construction.
Yumiko created a model in plasticine and depicted it from life from different points of view in graphite pencil. Such studies greatly help to memorise the main proportions of a nose and its planes seen at different angles. In addition to sculpting and long drawings, students also make three hundred sketches of a nose from life. About seventy percent of these sketches are done from the sculptures at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It took several sessions. Other sketches were created from the model as well as by drawing different people from life and imagination.
Sketching a nose is just one task out of one hundred. Imagine how much useful practice students receive and how much new information they learn during the entire course. This course covers all the needed topics of drawing from basic to more advanced. The study focuses on construction, anatomy, proportions, perspective, and tonal rendering. These subjects work together. Proportions help you place the features accurately. Anatomy explains the forms beneath the surface. Perspective shows how the head turns in space. Constructive drawing gives you a clear sequence for building the portrait from simple masses to refined details.
Students learn all the topics from how to draw shapes and simple objects in perspective, how to use rules of composition and effectively render tonal values to drawing portraits and figures in a realistic manner and making creative compositions that tell a story and evoke emotions. Students also submit every artwork they make in this course for constructive critique from Academy tutors. Such personal tutoring helps to develop their drawing skills to the advanced level by the end of this course. Life Drawing Academy offers video lessons, practical assignments, and written tutor support. The Correspondence Course adds a personalized curriculum and one-to-one guidance tailored to your current level and goals.
