Learning Perspective from Life: 50 Cube Drawings
Jeff, a Life Drawing Academy Correspondence Course student, completed a drawing assignment aiming to develop a sense of perspective. Following the task instructions, he constructed a paper cube with circles inscribed on its sides and then drew it from life from many different viewpoints.
Jeff completed 25 large sheets, with two studies on each sheet, 50 cube drawings in total. This amount of repetition is important. A cube may seem like a very simple object, but drawing it convincingly can be surprisingly difficult when your sense of perspective is still developing. Every edge has to relate correctly to the others, and the proportions of the planes constantly change depending on the viewer's position. The challenge becomes even greater when circles are added. Seen in perspective, those circles must transform into accurately constructed elliptical ovals. Their width, height, direction, and degree of foreshortening all change with the angle of the cube. This makes the exercise an excellent way to work on observation and spatial thinking.
