Anton Ažbe
Slovene realist painter and teacher of painting
1862 - 1905
Anton Azbe was born in 1862 to a peasant family in the Carniolan village of the Austrian Empire (present Slovenia). One of twins, Anton had a poor health and orphaned at the age of 8.
Anton Ažbe's art education started in the studio of Janež Wolf, where he was an apprentice. In 1882, Anton entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he studied for two years and thereafter, disillusioned with this institution, moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, more "liberal" than the conservative Viennese Academy.
In 1892, Anton Ažbe founded his own school of painting in Munich. In this school, he taught painting to Eastern European students, many of which became famous artists.
In Munich, he was recognized as a professional portrait painter and was regularly exhibited in the Glaspalast. There are only 26 graphic works of art, including studio studies, attributed to Anton Ažbe. Most of these artworks are exhibited in the National Gallery of Slovenia.
