Edgar Maxence was born in 1871. Edgar's art education was shaped by Elie Delaunay and Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he studied painting and drawing.
Edgar Maxence's works of art are done in distinctive style. He specialized in medieval and mythical subjects as well as in hermetic imagery that brought him a recognition as a French symbolist painter. Artworks of Edgar Maxence were was featured in exhibitions at the Musée d'Orsay and the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Rennes. He also exhibited in the Salon des Artistes Français from 1894 until 1939, and was active on the salon's committees and juries. From 1895 to 1897 Edgar Maxence exhibited at the Salon de la Rose+Croix.
In 1920 Edgar Maxence painted the image of Our Lady on the vaulted ceiling of the choir in the Basilica of the Rosary in Lourdes. He also illustrated the book Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc (1945) by Jean-Joseph-Léonce Villepelet (Bishop of Nantes 1936-1966).
