Giovanni Boldini was born in Ferrara in 1842 to a family of a painter. In 1862, Giovanni moved to Florence to study painting. He spent there six years, attending classes at the Academy of Fine Arts. In Florence, Boldini met other painters from the Macchiaioli group, who worked in a realistic manner. Artistic influence of these artists can be noted in Giovanni Boldini's landscape paintings.
Later on, Giovanni took interest in portrait painting and after moving to London became well-known for his characteristic style portraits paintings. His list of sitters included members of high society. In 1872, Giovanni Boldini moved to Paris, France, where he stayed and worked for the rest of his life.
Today, works of art by Giovanni Boldini can be seen in various museums around the world, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
