Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt was born into a family of a gold engraver in Baumgarten, near Vienna in 1862. Klimt's art education was shaped in at the Vienna University of Arts and Crafts, which he entered in 1876. Together with his two brothers and a friend, Gustav Klimt formed the "Company of Artists" and was awarded the Golden Order of Merit from the Emperor of Vienna. He was one of the most noticeable associates of the Vienna Art Nouveau (Vienna Secession) in 1897movement. As a president of Vienna Secession, which was helping new artists to establish themselves on a market, he published a magazine to present artworks of Vienna Secession's members. Gustav Klimt was made an honorary member of the Universities of Vienna and of Munich.
Gustav Klimt, Austrian decorative and symbolist painter, created numerous decorative paintings, murals, sketches as well as artworks of erotic nature. In the beginning of his creative career, Klimt got commissions to decorate public buildings and produced various historical scenes and figures. Later on, in his art, he took an interest in female body and sensuality, which is best presented in many paintings of his "golden period" and pencil drawings. Klimt's painting style is unique and recognizable. He used various decorative motifs and symbolic design elements in his works of art.
