Pietro Annigoni
Society and State Portraitist of the 20th century
1910–1988
Pietro Annigoni was born in 1910 in Milan, Italy. Pietro studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. Pietro Annigoni's style was based on the traditional techniques of the Italian Renaissance. Annigoni also painted religious works (including frescos in Italian churches) and ambitious allegorical scenes, and he regarded these as more important than his portraits.
He is internationally known for his portraits including Society and State figures such as Queen Elizabeth II, Pope John XXIII, and President John F. Kennedy.
In 1947, Annigoni co-founded the Modern Realist Painters to continue traditions of Renaissance painting techniques as opposed to abstract art of the mid-20th century. Pietro Annigoni exhibited internationally at institutions such as the Upper Grosvenor Galleries in London, the Galerie Beaux Arts in Paris, and the Brooklyn Museum among others.
